Treatment Preparation
Before Your Laser Hair Removal – What You Need to Know
To get the safest and most effective results, please follow these steps before your treatment:
- Stay out of the sun – Avoid sun exposure (including tanning beds) for 4–6 weeks before and after your treatment. Your skin needs to be as close to its natural tone as possible for safe and effective results. Treating tanned skin can lead to white or dark spots (hypopigmentation/hyperpigmentation) that may last for months.
- Stop certain skincare products – We may ask you to stop using specific creams or medications 3–5 days before your appointment. These might make your skin more sensitive.
- No bleaching, plucking, or waxing – For 4–6 weeks before treatment, avoid removing hair by the root. The laser needs the root hair in the follicle to be able to work properly.
- Cold sore prevention – If you’ve ever had cold sores (oral or genital herpes), let us know. You may be given antiviral medication to prevent a flare-up.
- No fake tan – Stop using self-tanning products at least 2 weeks before your treatment, and make sure any leftover product is completely removed from your skin.
Treatment Aftercare
Laser Hair Removal Aftercare – What to Expect & How to Care for Your Skin
Here’s how to take care of your skin after your laser hair removal treatment:
- Redness and swelling are normal – Your skin may look red and slightly swollen around each hair follicle. This can last a few hours or up to 2–3 days. It might feel like a mild sunburn at first.
- Cooling may be used – We might apply a cooling method after treatment to keep you comfortable.
- Soothe your skin – If you’d like, you can use a gentle, calming product like aloe vera gel.
- Makeup is okay – You can wear makeup after treatment as long as your skin isn’t irritated.
- Stay out of the sun – Sun exposure can cause dark spots, so avoid it and always wear SPF 30+ sunscreen during your treatment period.
- Don’t pick or scratch – Let your skin heal naturally. Avoid waxing, tweezing, or electrolysis for 4–6 weeks after treatment. Shaving is fine.
- Hair may shed after a few days – Between 5–14 days after treatment, you might see hair “falling out.” This is normal — it’s not new hair growth. Gently wash or wipe the area with a damp cloth or loofah to help it along.
- For underarms – Skip deodorant for 24 hours and use a powder instead if needed to avoid irritation.
- Gentle bathing is fine – You can bathe or shower, just treat your skin gently like you would with a sunburn for the first 24 hours.
- Know when to come back – Regrowth times vary:
- Upper body: Hair may return in 4–6 weeks
- Lower body: Hair might not come back for 2–3 months
Contact us as soon as you notice hair returning, and we’ll get your next session scheduled!
Laser Hair Removal: Frequently Asked Questions
Most clients describe the sensation as a quick, mild flick of heat, and thanks to Candela’s built-in cooling technology, treatments are far more comfortable than traditional laser systems.
For most people (unless there is a hormone imbalance) 6 to 10 treatments is sufficient to permanently remove all hairs in that area. For facial hair, the number of sessions is likely to be more, with an average of 8-10 sessions. After the first treatment most people will get a significant reduction in hair density.
Before proceeding with laser hair removal treatment, we offer a complimentary initial consultation. During this consultation, we will ask you a few questions regarding your health and lifestyle to ensure that laser hair removal is suitable for you. We conduct a thorough assessment, including enquiries about your medical history, previous treatments, current medications, allergies, and any pigmentary concerns.
Following the consultation, we perform a patch test on a small area of skin to check for any adverse reactions to our laser technology. If the patch test is successful, we can then schedule your laser hair removal treatment 48 hours later, at a time convenient for you. Please ensure that you shave the area to be tested prior to the patch test and refrain from shaving the treated area for 48 hours before your appointment.
For intimate hair removal, we offer the following options:
Hollywood: Complete removal of hair from both front and back, including the bottom beard, but excluding the buttocks.
Brazilian: Similar to a Hollywood, except for leaving a strip of hair on the pubis.
Traditional Bikini: Removal of hair up to the bikini line, including the upper and inner thighs.
Skimpy Bikini: More extensive than traditional, targeting areas further in, along with hair between the cheeks and the bottom area.
Yes – Candela’s dual-wavelength technology (Alexandrite for lighter skins and Nd:YAG for deeper tones) means we can safely and effectively treat all skin types. The system allows us to tailor each setting to your unique skin and hair combination, ensuring powerful results while protecting the surrounding tissue.
No, since the laser process relies on pigmentation to absorb light energy and convert it into heat energy, white hair lacks the necessary pigment. In instances where there are only a few white hairs in a particular area, electrolysis is a suitable alternative.
Have your last sunbed session a minimum of 14 days before your first laser session. The skin may not recover as effectively from the treatment due to the added trauma, which requires healing. If sunbed use is a regular part of your routine, it may be challenging to abstain for a while.
The duration of the recovery period varies for each individual, depending on the treated areas and their skin type, tone, and hair. To expedite healing, ensure proper skincare post-laser treatment and use a high-quality SPF. Adopting a good skincare routine to maintain skin health and suppleness will facilitate a quicker return to sunbed sessions.
The typical side effects of laser hair removal include:
Skin irritation
Temporary discomfort
Redness
Swelling
Pigment changes (temporary darkening or lightening of the treated skin)
If you have concerns about these potential side effects, we encourage you to consult with your medical practitioner. This is why we always conduct a patch test at least 24 hours before commencing any treatment.
This article from Harley Laser Specialists confirms how the Candela laser system delivers reliably long-lasting hair reduction through targeted follicle destruction.
Regrowth times vary with th Upper body, hair may return in 4–6 weeks but the Lower body might not come back for 2–3 months and so your sessions will need to be staggered appropriately to be the most effective.
